Structural Analysis

Diction – The narrator appears educated and speaks with elocution throughout the novel. His speech is on par with that of the white men and while it helps him to seem less barbaric it also sets him apart from the other men. The speaker often times comes across as a white person in his language because he speaks with a more proper language. Ellison uses this to show us that the narrator is just as bright as any of the white men but it also stresses the racial roles showing that advancement is improbable no matter how educated the man is.

Syntax- The cut off structure on page 31 adds to the “mistake” of the narrator’s use of “equality” when talking about social responsibility. The narrator becomes flustered when he is constantly cut off by the white men because of his use of a large word. The ask him to repeat it over and over again, laughing the whole time. When the narrator slips up and replaces responsibility with equality the room goes quiet. Whereas the men act with some benevolence toward the narrator when he embodies their idea of the model black citizen, they show their true faces when he threatens white supremacy.
